Letter from Capt. Jeff Nelson as he heads out on deployment
Hey CFP,
This letter is long overdue so I apologize for that, but this is a very fitting time to write it. Today is my official departure from Camp Atterbury IN, heading to Afganistan for the 143rd’s deployment. We are all extremely grateful to be leaving this horrible training facility and heading to conduct the mission we were assigned. Unfortunately the Army doesn’t pick their best and brightest to train Soldiers, so our training lacked important elements. Luckily as a unit we have been working on these skills heavily for the 6 months prior to coming here, so we are all prepped mentally and physically. The time hear was long and tedious. I linked up with another Captain from San Diego who is also a “CF KoolAid drinker”. So myself and Phil had someone to workout with. The gym here was lacking in every possible thing, except for nautilus machines, treadmills, and lots of mirrors. We did our best to get creative with what we had and made it work. As of yesterday, the Captain from SD was granted a non-profit affiliate to run at FOB Tarin Kowt. Since we have two Level 1 guys we can run it the entire deployment, so that’s something to look forward to.
I wanted to give a big Thank You to everyone that came out back in Novemeber to wish Phil and I farewell. It meant a lot to me! I have grown so much since I started CrossFitting over two years ago and it is all due to the CFP community. Training, competing and celebrating with everyone has been an absolute blast. I have learned what true fitness really is, and now I laugh thinking about how I used to do bicep curls in the mirror. From the coaches to the members I always looked forward to getting to the box, even when it was before 6 AM. You are all considered my friends and family.
It’s been great to hear from everyone since I have been gone, and please feel free to contact me via Facebook or email, my contact is at the bottom of this email.
I can not wait to come back to see all the changes at CFP and meet all the new members and reconnect with all the old ones.
Take care and good luck in the 2012 Games. I’ll be back before you know it.
