NewFitter Throwdown ReCap!

This past Saturday Commonwealth Crossfit hosted their first annual Newfitter Throwdown for athletes with less than 6 months experience with Crossfit.  The competition was open to 25 men and 25 women.  Three Crossfit Providence members competed in the event – Caitlin Towey, Jennet Toyjanova, and Melissa Lofton.  This was the first competition for all three of us, and the conversation on the car ride up there mainly consisted of talk of how nervous we all were!

Once we arrived we were given information on the three WODs we would be competing in and our heat numbers.  Luckily we were each in different heats so we could cheer each other on all day!   Our nerves were all settled a little bit when we saw what the WODs consisted of – as the organizers had promised, the competition was programmed with movements that Crossfitters of all levels could do. After the movements and standards were explained, the first WOD kicked off.

WOD 1: 8 Minute AMRAP

  • 8 Wallballs (8lb)
  • 8 Box Jumps (16”)
  • 8 Burpees

Caitlin kicked off the day in the first heat and KILLED this WOD, finishing with 165 reps, which was good enough for 3rd place overall.  Jennet and Melissa each put on a solid performance as well, coming in 18th (132 reps) and 12th (137 reps) respectively.

WOD 2:

The second WOD consisted of two two minute AMRAPs with 1 minute rest in between.

PART A. – 2 Minutes Deadlift for total weight lifted.

Eg. 60 Reps at 100lbs yields 6000 lbs. total.  Competitors choose their weight.

Rest 1 Minute

Part B: 2 Minute Jump Ropes.

Contestants have 2 minutes to get the rope under them as many times as possible. A single under counts as 1, a double under counts as 2.

We each decided to choose that was light enough that we could continue to lift the entire 2 minutes, but heavy enough to drive up our scores.  Also, we all had to go with single jumps since even though we are all working at double unders, we aren’t quite there yet.  Melissa came in 3rdplace in the deadlift portion with a total volume of 5775 pounds, and Caitlin and Jennet each ended up with over 200 points for the jump rope portion.  After the scores were added, the girls ended up in 14th (Melissa), 16th (Jennet), and 20th (Caitlin) in WOD 2.

WOD 3: For Time

  • 500M Row
  • 40 Weighted OH Reverse Lunges
  • 30 KB Swings
  • 20 Air Squats
  • 10 Knee Tucks

At this point in the day, most of our nerves were gone and we were all just excited to get the last WOD knocked out!  Caitlin was first to finish in her heat and with a time of 5:33 finished more than 30 seconds faster than the rest of the female athletes in heat 1. Jennet flew through the WOD taking no breaks and ended up with a time of 5:21, which was good enough for 8th place!    Melissa was in the last heat and closed out the day with a time of 6:35.

When the dust settled and the scores were calculated, the three CFP girls ended up pretty close to each other in the standings.  With 34 points, Caitlin landed in 12th place; with 42 points, Jennet was in 16th place; and with 46 points, Melissa ended up in 18th place.

The event was really well run – the judges and organizers made all of the visitors feel as welcome as the members there.  In true Crossfit spirit, all of the competitors cheered on each other until the last athlete of the last heat finished!  All in all, even though we didn’t place, all three of us were very happy with how the day went.  We spent the day with some pretty cool people, got over our nerves of competing, and had a blast!  For anyone on the fence about whether they should sign up for a competition, we each said we would definitely recommend competing – among other things, you’ll meet fun people from other boxes, get to test your limits, and get to know your fellow CFP members in an environment outside of the normal setting!
