The Northeast Masters Results

All CrossFit Providence Masters placed in the top 10 of their respected age categories!  Congrats to Brian Ray on placing 1st!

Saturday was The Northeast Masters Tournament 2012 for athletes 40 and over. The tournament took place at CrossFit Norwalk in Connecticut. The drive there was near whiteout conditions and we saw 2 cars spin out of control but we made it up in time. There were 5 age divisions for both men and women (60+, 55-59, 50-54, 45-49, 40-44).

CrossFit Providence was represented by James Needham (40-44), John Beauregard (45-50), James Hawkins (50-54), Brian Ray (55-59), and Missy Santos (40-44) The 1st WOD had a 12 Minute Cap and was 4 Rounds:5 Push Ups10 KB Swings 53/3515 Goblet Squats30 Double Unders (90 Singles if scaling) This tournament had one caveat that I did not necessarily agree with and that was that all WODs could be scaled but ranked lower than Rx scores. I felt as though there should have been a separate scaled division. 

James Hawkins, John Beauregard, and Missy Santos completed the 1st WOD RX except for the double unders. They all did 90 singles instead and finished ahead of other individuals but because they scaled they were automatically placed behind athletes that didn’t even finish the WOD. In hindsight it might have been better for them to RX and just get as many Double Unders as they could. I guess they now have something to work on before future WODs.

The 2nd WOD was a strength WOD and was only 5 Minutes. All Athletes had 5 clean attempts 1 every minute on the minute. The athlete’s score was the total weight cleaned for all 5 attempts. This was a very interesting WOD because you wanted to push yourself to have max lifts without any missed lifts. It was amazing to see how working in front of the crowed made the weight seem lighter. We all did well. I saw John Beauregard attempt 185# in the warm up and failed and said “nope that’s too heavy” but during the WOD lifted it with no problem. I myself tied a PR. 

The 3rd WOD was a timed WOD with a 12 min cutoff of 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 reps of Deadlifts 225/155 (55+ 205/140) and Box Jumps 24″/20″. After seeing how his score was affected from the 1st WOD, John decided to go RX on the last WOD and did very well. Again finishing well ahead of other athletes. Unfortunately I did not record each of our scores/placements for every WOD and CrossFit Norwalk only listed each athlete’s final placement on their website.

Here is how everyone did in their respected age groups: James Needham 4th, Missy Santos 4th, James Hawkins 5th, John Beauregard 9th, and after 3 WODs the newest addition to CFP’s coaching staff Coach Brain Ray was 2nd. This meant he was able to go to a 4th WOD to determine a winner as only the top 2 athletes in each age group advanced to the 4th WOD.

WOD 4 was 35 Thrusters 65/55#, 35 Burpees and 35 Pull ups for time. I don’t know if the 4th WOD was a sudden death playoff type WOD where each athlete started out with a clean slate or if the 4th WOD score was added to the other 3, all I know is that when the Gym Chalk smoke finally cleared Brian was in 1st place! I am very proud of everyone that went. I think we all developed as athletes and will take something away from it. Being in a competition with other elder athletes made me realize that what I read on one of the tee-shirts there was true: “age is just a number… but every second counts”

    (I wish I knew about this event – how could I have missed this annoucement???)

    Wow….what a great write up, James and what a great accomplishment for all of you!!!! It’s a testament to your dedication and passion and shows great courage. I applaud all of you and look forward to seeing you breaking all sorts of records for the Masters of CFP!!!

    Thanks James. that was a great recap of what turned out to be a fun, albeit a long day down in Norwalk. All the CFP Masters did so well. I’m really happy and proud to be a part of the CFP family.
    And I recommend to all members that they consider participating in CrossFit competitions. Whether its a local throw-down with another gym or something a bit bigger like this masters event, competitions give you the chance to show what you can do in a safe, non-judgemental environment. Everybody is very friendly and supportive. You get to meet people from other CrossFits, get to know some CFP athletes better by spending the day together and you get a glimpse of what a positive, healthy, fun community CrossFit is creating everywhere. And if it all works out just right at the end of the day you get to stand on a podium and have your picture taken with some very generous people who are also awesome athletes.
