Again Faster Garage Games 2011 Finals Recap

 By Coach Adam

This past weekend, the New England Finals of the Garage Games series were held at CrossFit Southie, in Boston.  The competition was stiff, with over 250 men and women from throughout the Northeast coming to throw down.  Three athletes were there to represent CFP:  Megan Long, coming off a strong performance at the New England Team Throwdown, competed in the women’s RX division, while Coach Bryce and Coach Adam entered the RX men’s field.

The first two workouts of Saturday were short and fast-paced.   The first, “Whitey Bulger,” featured rowing, burpees, and squat cleans.  The second, a 7-minute AMRAP of snatches and wall-balls, saw strong performances by all three CFPers, with Bryce coming away with a 10th place showing.

The last event on Saturday, “Spider-man,” was 5 rounds of 20 box jumps, 15 pull-ups, and 5 wall climbs.  Anyone who has done wall climbs knows how difficult they get after a few, and this was definitely on display during this workout.  However, a strong effort was put forth by all three athletes, with Bryce finishing just under the 15 minute time cap (which more than half of the competitors weren’t able to do), and Adam taking 9th in the WOD.

Day 2 began with a long, chipper-type workout known as “GI Joe.”  Megan displayed a rock-solid overhead squat, and her recent dedication to the skill of double-unders paid off, as there were 100 of them in the WOD.  The recent focus on gymnastic skills also benefitted Adam, who was able to get 20 unbroken toes-to-bar on his way to a 4th place finish in the workout.

The final event of the weekend, known as “The Departed,” was a brutal couplet of push jerks with 185lbs (125lbs for the ladies) and consecutive rope climbs.  With the field cut prior to only the top 18 men and women, Adam was left to face the challenge alone.  With only 2 male athletes finishing in the 12-minute time cap, Adam struggled through 4 rounds before time was called.

Overall, it was another impressive showing by the CFP team.  Megan Long finished the weekend with a 35th place finish in an extremely competitive field of women (To give you an idea, the top female time on “Spider-man” was 5:44!).  In her short time so far at CrossFit Providence, Megan has improved in leaps and bounds, and shows no sign of stopping.  Bryce finished the weekend in 28th (out of 115 men), unfortunately not making it into the last workout, which he would have done extremely well on.  Adam finished with a 9th place finish overall by way of strong performances in the two longer workouts of the weekend.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a competition without CFP supporters making their voices heard and their presence felt.  A special thanks go out to all those who made the trip to Boston to cheer on the athletes.  Big thank yous to Sarah Hanley, Sarah Long, Chris Gerardi, Kathryn Lewis, Coach Gino, Cade Kitrell, Julie and Jim Giorgi (and Ava and Ella), Emily Xavier, Coach Alecia, Jon Janton, Lorena Corrente, and Bob Tessier for pushing our athletes along.
